Upper eyelid surgery can rejuvenate your face by eliminating excess fat, skin tissue, or muscle around the eyes that may be causing them to droop or creating a tired and haggard appearance. If drooping upper eyelids impede your vision and affect your quality of life, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Madhukar G. Chhatre and his team in Kansas City, MO, can work with your insurance company to maximize your coverage. Upper eyelid surgery can enhance both the way the world sees you and the way you see the world.
Upper eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the appearance of worn or tired eyes and improve your line of sight.
Understanding Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery is a procedure that can correct hooded or tired looking eyes and bulges in the eyelid caused by excess fat. This procedure may also improve vision that is obscured by sagging upper eyelids. It will not, however, affect the position of the brows. In such cases, Dr. Chhatre can perform an additional brow lift procedure. After upper eyelid surgery, your eyes could appear smoother, lifted, and more awake. Incisions will be hidden within the eyelid crease, creating a completely natural appearance.
Are You A Candidate For Upper Eyelid Surgery?
During a consultation with Dr. Chhatre, he will review your complete medical history to ensure that there are no conditions that might adversely affect healing. He will also check for other causes of drooping eyelids, which could require a different treatment. Patients should generally be in good health with realistic goals and a positive outlook for what the surgery will accomplish. Candidates for the procedure should not smoke or use other tobacco products. Since some conditions of the eye can complicate surgery, Dr. Chhatre can work with your eye doctor or primary care physician to determine if there are any additional concerns about the safety of your surgery.
Your Upper Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery can last one to two hours, depending on the complexity of your procedure. Before your treatment begins, the surgical area will be cleaned and you will receive anesthesia. Incision guidelines may be drawn and the incisions will be carefully placed in a way to ensure they will be as inconspicuous as possible. Excess skin and, if necessary, a small amount of muscle will be carefully tightened and removed. To reduce puffiness in your eyelids, fat may either be removed or repositioned. After the fat deposits are sculpted, your incisions will be closed with sutures. A protective ointment or moist bandages may be applied to promote healing.

As with any surgery, there will be some swelling, bruising, and discomfort following your procedure. These symptoms can typically be alleviated with cold compresses, elevation, and prescribed medications. If non-dissolvable sutures are used, they will normally be removed within five to seven days. You should notice improvement in swelling and bruising around your eyes in approximately 10 days. Most patients may return to work in a week, but should avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for at least two weeks. Dr. Chhatre can advise you on when you can resume your normal schedule.
