Permanent makeup is a form of tattooing that allows patients to wear eye, eyebrow, and lip cosmetics without the need for daily application. Our esthetician, Keri Eichhorn, has applied permanent makeup for over 15 years at Summit Plastic Surgery & Med Spa in Kansas City, MO, and is passionate about helping patients with their skin care. Permanent makeup is an excellent solution for patients with allergies to traditional cosmetics and for anyone who finds daily makeup application challenging.
The Application Procedure
Permanent makeup, which is also called cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation, is applied either by hand or with a machine using traditional tattooing methods. The initial application session typically lasts one to two hours, and subsequent touch-up sessions usually take much less time.
Permanent eyeliner and eye shadow are two types of permanent eye makeup. Permanent eyeliner can be applied to the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both eyelids to create a look from soft to defined. Permanent eye shadow can be applied in a number of different colors and styles, depending on the tastes and preferences of the patient.
Permanent eyebrows can mimic the appearance of eyebrow hair by creating shape and definition where they were once lacking. Patients who have undergone chemotherapy or who are experiencing other conditions that cause hair loss are outstanding candidates for permanent eyebrow application.
Because the repeated application of lipstick throughout the day can become tiresome, many patients appreciate a lasting solution such as permanent lipstick. Patients with thin, crooked, or poorly defined lips are generally excellent candidates for permanent lipstick application.
Permanent lipstick can be applied in whatever shade is most desirable to the patient, from natural to vivid. Permanent lipstick can also create a look of fuller lips and reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth. After permanent lipstick application, patients can continue to accentuate their lips by applying lip gloss or lipstick on top of the permanent lipstick.

Benefits and Risks of Permanent Makeup
Patients with health conditions that lead to hair loss on the face, especially near the eyebrows, may be eligible for permanent makeup application. In addition, patients with impaired vision or dexterity issues may also be excellent candidates for permanent makeup.
Permanent makeup lasts approximately seven to 10 years with proper care, and periodic touch-ups may be required to maintain your desired look. After the initial application, some fading is to be expected. Therefore, you should wait until this happens to see the final product, and consult with your esthetician to decide whether further work is needed.
Like other tattoos, permanent makeup may result in a number of anticipated side effects, including bleeding, bruising, and inflammation following the procedure. As with any introduction of chemicals into the body, permanent makeup may cause sensitivity or an allergic reaction.
A rare but serious risk associated with permanent makeup application is infection. Infection is generally only a possibility if the equipment used during the procedure has not been properly sterilized. In some cases, keloid scars, which are tough, raised, discolored scars that can develop after tattooing or injuries to the skin, may appear after permanent makeup application.
The most significant potential drawback of permanent makeup application is regret or dissatisfaction with the procedure after completion. Although permanent makeup can be modified to some extent, it is difficult to remove even with laser surgery. Therefore you must understand the permanency of the procedure up front before determining whether the procedure is right for you. .
