IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL treatments help to reduce the appearance of pigmented lesions such as sun damage, age spots or liver spots, vascular lesions such as telangectasia(spider veins) and rosacea as well as acne and pigmented acne scarring. If you are interested in finding out if photorejuvenation is the right treatment for you contact Kansas City area licensed estheticians, Keri or Heather for your complimentary skin care consultation today.
How Does IPL Work?
IPL is a pulsed light which is similar to lasers but with a larger beam for wider coverage and faster more comfortable treatments. This treatment helps lessen the hyperpigmentation, redness and acne in similar ways.
- Pigmented Lesions– pulses of filtered light are directed onto the skin and absorbed by the melanin. When the light is absorbed by pigment the light heats the pigment and breaks it apart.
- Vascular Lesions– the filtered pulses of light are directed onto the skin to heat the small capillaries under the skin that cause telangectasia(spider veins), rosacea and other vascular lesions. The heat from the light shrinks the capillaries which in turn may redden or become red following the treatment.
- Acne– the filtered pulsed light is directed on to the skin and absorbed by the bacteria and sebaceous glands which are responsible for acne. IPL attacks acne in two different ways. First, it kills the acne causing bacteria which is trapped in the oil glands. Second, it heats the same glands to decrease bacteria production which leads to future acne.
Following treatments the results will be seen in 7-10 days. Anywhere from 3-8 treatments may be required depending on the severity of each persons skin.
Who Is A Good Candidate For IPL?
IPL can only treat light skin tones. Since the light targets pigment the skin needs to be light in color to be able to ‘see’ the hyperpigmentation, vascular lesions or acne. The skin can’t have sun exposure for 4 weeks prior to the first treatment, during the course of procedures, as well as 2 weeks after the final procedure. Use of and SPF 30 or higher is required and the use of Retinol products as well as photosensitive drugs should be discontinued 7 days prior to each treatment.
IPL treatments can also be done in conjunction with other treatments/surgeries to boost results. Doing a series of IPL following facelift surgery or fractional CO2 laser resurfacing will ensure you get the best results possible.
