Saline v. Silicone Gel
There are many differences between saline and silicone breast implants and deciding which one is best for you should be done after consultation with your doctor. At Summit Practice Plastic Surgery and Med Spa, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Chhatre will discuss the benefits of each type with you to determine which choice is best for you, both aesthetically and medically.
An advantage of saline breast implants is that, if ruptured, the saline is absorbed by the body. Saline implants are also less expensive, require a smaller incision and during surgery can be adjusted in small increments, depending on the aesthetic or physical needs of the patient. A disadvantage is the saline implants are more likely to show ripples, creases and folds in the implant or the implant itself may appear less natural in small breasted and very thin patients.
Silicone breast implants were approved by the FDA in November 2006, with a variety of conditions including an age restriction of 22 years or older. Just like saline implants, Dr. Chhatre at Summit Plastic Surgery and Med Spa likes to place the silicone gel implants under the muscle. An advantage of silicone breast implants is that they tend to look and feel more natural. Rippling is also far less likely to occur in women with silicone implants than in women with saline implants. Unlike saline breast implants, silicone gel breast implants are pre-filled. Silicone gel implants also require slightly longer incisions as compared to saline implants. Silicone gel implants may require more follow-up care in that the patient may need to undergo regular screening to detect leaking or ruptures.
Both implants come in a variety of sizes and shapes.
