Esthetician vs. Dermatologist
Serving Kansas City & Lee’s Summit, Missouri
Keri, our in-house licensed esthetician, receives rave reviews every day from clients. But for those of you wondering whether an esthetician can offer the treatments you desire or if you need the services of a dermatologist, the explanation of the abilities and limitations of an esthetician can help you decide.
Dermatologist
A dermatologist is a medical doctor with specialist training in the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases. He can prescribe medications and perform any type of skin treatment for which he has received training. While a dermatologist can perform most treatments a licensed esthetician can offer, many choose to restrict their expertise to specialized treatments, often excluding cosmetic and rejuvenation procedures.
You should seek the care of a dermatologist if you have:
- A prolonged skin rash
- Suddenly appearing moles or dark spots
- Sores or cysts
- Mole removal
Some dermatologists may bear the title of “Cosmetic Dermatologist” and offer treatments such as liposuction, BOTOX® treatment, or other injectable fillers. However, be careful when considering allowing anyone besides a certified cosmetic surgeon to perform cosmetic surgery procedures.
Esthetician Services
At Summit Plastic Surgery & Med Spa, we offer a number of procedures which are performed by Keri, our licensed esthetician. By working with Dr. Chhatre, plastic surgeon, she is able to offer our clientele a wider range of treatments through the practice than an esthetician’s license alone allows.
Licensed estheticians are able to perform services such as:
- Microdermabrasion
- Facials
- Permanent makeup
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) – For acne, sun damage, and hair removal
- Eyelash extensions
Keri has completed training for each procedure we offer in our medical spa. By offering these treatments through a licensed esthetician, Dr. Chhatre is able to focus on cosmetic surgery procedures and leave many non-surgical procedures in Keri’s capable hands.
If your concerns are purely aesthetic or if you are interested in skin care for the improvement of your skin’s appearance and texture, an esthetician can offer virtually any treatment a dermatologist can offer, often with equal or greater expertise.
If you have discovered a lesion on your skin or are at a high risk for skin cancer, you should consult with a dermatologist immediately.
