Top Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

While nobody can predict the future, it seems that popular trends in cosmetic surgery procedures are beginning to shift. Where liposuction was once the most common cosmetic surgery procedure performed, recent numbers indicate a change in the most commonly requested procedures. New trends are starting to show:

  • More men requesting cosmetic surgery
  • An increase in breast augmentation over liposuction
  • The popularity of non-surgical procedures, such as BOTOX®, is on the rise
  • A higher percentage of reconstructive procedures is being performed

Some of the procedures most favored by men are:

  • Gynecomastia (male breast reduction)
  • Liposuction
  • Chin implants
  • Fractional CO2 Laser

While the cosmetic surgery field has slowed from the almost feverish pace it had reached in 2007, Kansas City plastic surgeon Dr. Matt Chhatre is still seeing a regular flow of patients. Despite the economic downturn, it seems that many individuals are still opting to aesthetically enhance their bodies.

Some of the most popular non-invasive procedures being requested are:

  • BOTOX®
  • Facial fillers (Restylane® and Radiesse®)
  • IPL hair removal
  • Chemical Peels/Microdermabrasion
  • Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments

To learn more about the many cosmetic procedures available at Summit Plastic Surgery & Med Spa in Lee's Summit, Missouri, please contact our Kansas City plastic surgery office today to schedule your free initial consultation with Dr. Chhatre's nurse.

Plastic Surgery During the Economic Downturn

While critics of plastic surgery may be touting a drop in its popularity due to the economic downturn, the truth is that plastic surgery saw an increase in the overall number of procedures within the U.S. last year, and will do so again this year.

The reason for the continued popularity of plastic surgery procedures is most likely that it does not cater to vanity as often as expressed by the press. Our patients frequently express a desire to improve their quality of life by undergoing a plastic surgery procedure. Individuals who have struggled with low self-esteem or physical discomfort for years find that plastic surgery can offer the relief that no self-help book or fad diet can achieve.

If you are considering plastic surgery but have been hesitating, consider the following:

  • Plastic surgery is an investment in your current and future happiness
  • Plastic surgery can affect more than how others view you – it can affect how you view yourself
  • The majority of individuals who have had plastic surgery are glad they invested the time and money to improve their quality of life
  • When you meet with Kansas City plastic surgeon Dr. Matt Chhatre, he will help you make sure that your goals are realistic and can be achieved

To make an appointment for your free initial consultation, with Dr. Chhatre's nurse, please contact our Kansas City plastic surgery office today. Summit Plastic Surgery & Med Spa serves patients in Lee's Summit and Kansas City, Missouri.

Fractional CO2 Skin Resurfacing

If your skin shows signs of aging and you want to improve this, skin resurfacing lasers may be your best bet. However, while skin resurfacing is an excellent way to rejuvenate the face, there are some drawbacks. Traditional CO2 lasers may leave your skin red, have a longer recovery period than you'd planned for, and can even scar or cause pigmentation problems.

The fractional CO2 resurfacing laser eliminates these drawbacks and leaves you with younger and healthier looking skin. By reducing fine lines and wrinkles, shrinking pore size, and tightening your skin, the fractional CO2 laser can improve the skin with very little recovery time.

Some of the benefits of the fractional CO2 skin resurfacing include:

  • Blending uneven pigmentation
  • Clearing sun-damaged skin
  • Minimizing acne scars
  • Smoothing lines and wrinkles
  • Reducing the size of your pores
  • Less pain and recovery time

If you have sun or age damaged skin, you may be a candidate for resurfacing with the fractional CO2 laser. The treatment is very fast, virtually painless, and completely safe and effective.

After your skin resurfacing treatment, the redness and swelling will only last for a few days. After three days, you can speak with our licensed esthetician about keeping your appearance, as well as the application of mineral makeup to return nutrients to your skin.

If you are interested in finding out more about the fractional CO2 skin resurfacing treatment in the Kansas City and Lee's Summit, Missouri area, please contact the experienced staff at Summit Plastic Surgery & Med Spa for an initial consultation.

Winter Skincare Tips

While we frequently hear people around us talk about the importance of skin care during the summer months, the truth is winter conditions often batter our skin with harsher weather and irritants than summer conditions do. Here are a few winter skin care tips to help you keep your skin glowing during the holiday season:

Eat your veggies. A proper diet of fruits and vegetables or a vitamin supplement can help your body find the nutrients necessary for healthy skin throughout the winter months. Make sure you get enough of vitamins B, D, E, Magnesium and Zinc.

Keep your feet warm. Wet socks and gloves trap water against your skin and can leech the moisture out of it. When you come in from outdoor play, make sure to put on dry clothes immediately. Adding an application of lotion underneath will help replace the moisture before you miss it.

Don't lick your lips. While this may seem like a strange recommendation, the same is true about saliva as water trapped against your skin. Licking your lips actually pulls the moisture out of your skin, drying out and chapping your lips, leading to cracking and flaking skin. Instead, invest in a lip balm with jojoba butter or shea butter and a high SPF rating, and apply it liberally to your lips throughout the day.

Esthetician vs. Dermatologist

Choosing an esthetician over a dermatologist is sometimes a practical decision, and even a beneficial one. A licensed esthetician can offer most of the skin care treatments available from any dermatologist and often has more experience with certain cosmetic procedures than a dermatologist who focuses on the treatment of skin disease.

If you are trying to decide between working with a licensed esthetician versus a dermatologist, the following rule of thumb may be helpful:

Choose a licensed esthetician when:

  • You are undergoing routine facial treatments
  • Your concerns are primarily cosmetic
  • You are looking for advice on general skin care
  • You are interested in a facial, skin peel, laser skin treatment, or microdermabrasion, or permanent makeup

Choose a dermatologist when:

  • You have an abnormal skin condition
  • You have a recurring rash or irritation
  • You find a lesion on your face, ears, neck, chest, back or arms
  • You have a high risk for skin cancer

Our licensed Kansas City esthetician, Keri, cannot prescribe medication, but Dr. Chhatre may fill any prescriptions you may need.

Should You Quit Smoking Before Plastic Surgery?

While this may seem like an obvious question with an obvious answer, many patients do not understand the negative impact smoking can have on the outcome of their plastic surgery procedure. Smoking can inhibit the flow of blood to your healing incisions and cause skin flap necrosis.

If you are a smoker and have been considering quitting, the best time is before your plastic surgery procedure. Studies show that if you stop smoking as little as four weeks before your procedure, your chances of a complication-free recovery increase. The potential ease of your recovery increases the longer you refrain from smoking before undergoing a surgical procedure.

Some other ways you can increase your likelihood for a complication free recovery are:

  • Follow the surgeon's orders
  • Do not miss follow-up appointments, even if you feel fine
  • Wear recommended compression garments
  • Avoid heavy lifting until recommended
  • Restrict your movement as recommended by your surgeon
  • Have someone help you with difficult tasks
  • Request a prescription to help you stop smoking
