Breast Implant Shapes

The decision to undergo breast augmentation is an important one. How you choose your plastic surgeon, your desired increase in breast size, and the amount you wish to spend are all important considerations in the process. One consideration many women do not take into account until they arrive at their initial consultation is the shape of the breast implant.

There are two breast implant shapes:

• Round
• Teardrop

Concerns About Teardrop Breast Implants

Teardrop breast implants are often marketed as appearing more “natural” by holding the greater volume of the implant at the base of the breast to mimic the natural fullness of breast tissue.  Placing round smooth surfaced implants under the muscle natural looking results could be obtained.  It also creates a more natural curvature over the breast implant and reduces the likelihood of complications with heavier breast implants.

Another, disadvantage of teardrop implants is the possibility of an implant to rotate over time once it has been inserted. The surface of teardrop implants must be textured to help prevent this, but the same danger does not apply to round implants. If a round implant rotates, there is little or no resulting change in the appearance of the breast.
